About Kilmardinny Loch
Waterfowl are the main draw here. You'll spot mallards, tufted ducks, and if you're lucky, grebes gliding across the water with that distinctive jerky motion. The surrounding woodland teems with songbirds, especially in spring and early summer. There's a decent walking circuit round the loch itself, nothing strenuous, just enough to work up a mild appetite before heading to Glasgow or back towards Stirling proper.
For families with younger kids, it works as a gentle half-hour diversion. Older children and serious bird enthusiasts will find more to occupy their time. The light here is particularly good in late afternoon - golden rather than harsh. No facilities that I could find, so come prepared with water and a packed lunch if you're making a morning of it.
Staying at The WHW Hotel & Campsite a few miles away gives you a solid base for exploring this corner of the Lowlands. The loch itself is free to access, though opening hours weren't clearly signposted when I visited. It's the sort of place that rewards turning up early, when the water's calm and the noise from the road is minimal.
