About Kildownies Hill

The walk up Kildownies Hill takes about forty minutes from Kinross, and the views across the Perthshire countryside are genuinely excellent - you can see right across to the Ochil Hills on a clear day. It's not a particularly dramatic peak, but that's rather the point. This is proper hill-walking terrain without the knee-battering scramble you get elsewhere.

The summit itself is bare and grassy, windswept more often than not, but the relief of reaching the top after a steady climb through mixed woodland makes it feel like a proper achievement. Families with kids aged eight and up will manage it fine if they're reasonably fit - though younger ones might struggle with the steepness of the final push.

The real appeal is how well it slots into a wider Perthshire walking holiday. From Wild Goose Glamping just down the road, you could knock this out as a morning walk and still have the afternoon free for exploring Kinross itself or pottering around the nearby lochs. Gallowhill offers a slightly more traditional base if you're caravan camping, though it's a bit further out.

There's no visitor infrastructure on the hill itself - no café, no car park, just the hill. Wear proper boots because the path gets boggy in places, particularly after rain. Early autumn is best, when the light's lovely and the midges have finally cleared off. Worth doing once, certainly, but don't expect it to take your breath away.
