Kidhow Pike

The walk up Kidhow Pike from Hawes is straightforward enough - steep in places, but nothing that'll have you cursing your trainers halfway through. You're looking at a proper Wensleydale fell, the kind of place where the views open up suddenly and make the climb feel worth every step. From the summit you get expansive views across the valley, with the town of Hawes sitting neat below and the broader Yorkshire Dales spreading out in all directions.

It's a good shout for families with older children and walkers after a couple of hours on the fells without needing technical equipment. The path is well-used and marked, so navigation isn't fiddly. Allow roughly two to three hours for a steady round trip depending on your fitness. There's something satisfying about bagging a peak with relatively straightforward access - you get the views and the sense of achievement without drama.

If you're basing yourself at either Stablefell Holidays or Hawes Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite - both excellent spots - Kidhow Pike works perfectly as a half-day outing. Hawes itself has decent cafes and pubs for post-walk refuelling, and the proximity to other Wensleydale walks means you could easily combine it with exploring Aysgarth Falls or the valley floor trails. Go midweek if you can; weekends get busy with the Instagram crowd, and a quiet summit is always better than a crowded one.
