Keyhaven Marshes

The marshes stretch out in front of you like a watercolour painting left out in the rain - soft, shifting, utterly alive. Keyhaven Marshes, just across the water from Lymington, is one of those places that rewards patience. You won't find gift shops or ice cream vans here. What you get instead is salt marsh, shallow lagoons, and genuinely impressive birdwatching territory.

The best approach is to walk the footpaths that thread through the marshes, particularly in early morning or late afternoon when the light hits properly and the birds are most active. Keen ornithologists will spend hours here tracking waders and wildfowl. Children get restless faster - it's a bit boggy underfoot and there's not much to do beyond looking and listening. Bring binoculars. Bring a bird guide if you're serious about it.

It's free to access, which is the main selling point. Allow two to three hours if you're taking it seriously, or pop in for a quick walk if you're staying nearby. The closest camping option is Lytton Lawn Touring Park over at Shorefield, barely a mile and a half away - genuinely convenient for a morning marsh walk before breakfast.

Timing matters here. Spring migration and autumn bird movements are when this place absolutely sings. Winter can be bleak and muddy. Summer is quieter, less dramatic. Go when the birds are moving, and you'll understand why the locals keep recommending it.
