Kent Museum of Freemasonry

The Freemasons' Hall in Canterbury holds a museum that most visitors either know about or walk straight past without realising what's inside. It's housed within a proper working lodge building, and what you'll find is a surprisingly absorbing collection of regalia, historical documents, and lodge artefacts that tell the story of Freemasonry in Kent over centuries.

Unless you're already interested in Masonic history, this won't grab you immediately. But if you are - or if you're curious about ritual, symbolism, and how these organisations actually function - it's genuinely worth an hour. You'll see ceremonial dress, old meeting records, and explanations of lodge practices that make it clear this is about much more than the conspiracy theories that swirl around it. The volunteers who run it know their stuff and aren't precious about answering questions.

It's free, which removes any hesitation about popping in. The opening hours are straightforward - Monday to Saturday, 10am to 4pm - and it's right in Canterbury, so you can couple it with the Cathedral or a wander along the High Street without any bother. Families with older kids who enjoy social history will get something from it; younger children will likely find it a bit dull. If you're staying at Canterbury Camping and Caravanning Club Campsite or Brook Farm Glamping nearby, it's a decent wet-weather option or a rainy-afternoon filler. Not essential, but if Masonic history piques your interest, don't skip it.
