Kent & East Sussex Railway - (Bodiam Station)

This is a working heritage railway line that runs steam trains between Bodiam and Tenterden, and Bodiam Station itself is where most visitors hop on and off, surrounded by beautifully restored Victorian station buildings and vintage railway infrastructure. You can wander the platforms, watch the engines being shunted around, and spend a good couple of hours exploring the station yard and small museum bits dotted about without needing to actually ride the train, though a journey is genuinely worthwhile if you've got the time and budget.

It's brilliant for kids who are into trains and steam engines, but also genuinely interesting for adults who appreciate the meticulous restoration work. History types will enjoy the period detail and engineering heritage, while the setting itself - just outside Robertsbridge - is lovely countryside that pairs well with a walk afterwards.

The railway runs seasonally, so check ahead before visiting. Admission varies depending on whether you're just looking around the station or booking a train ride. If you're staying at The Original Hut Company just 0.2 miles away, this becomes an easy morning or afternoon activity that won't swallow your whole day. Seven Acre Woods is slightly further out if you want a rural camping base for exploring the wider area.

The whole experience feels properly authentic - no theme-park varnish, just genuine railway heritage enthusiasts running the show. Steep for some tastes, but if vintage trains appeal to you at all, it's worth the detour.
