Kennet & Avon Visitors' Centre

The Kennet & Avon Canal runs right through here, and the visitor centre sits at a proper sweet spot for anyone wanting to understand what makes this waterway tick. You get the history of the canal itself - Georgian engineering, the whole lot - plus information about the wildlife and walking routes that branch off in all directions. It's not flashy, but it's genuinely useful if you're planning to spend time on or near the water.

Reading's close by, which means you're never far from shops and decent food if things get tedious indoors. The centre works best if you're already keen on canals or planning longer walks along the towpath. Families with young kids might find it a bit static unless they're the type to get excited about lock gates and historical plaques. A good stop for forty minutes or so before heading out for a proper walk.

If you're staying at Ravenswing Park just up the road, this is worth a quick visit to get your bearings - the staff usually know the best spots for picnics and which stretches are worth walking. The canal itself is lovely year-round, though spring and early autumn beat the summer crowds. Free entry as far as I can gather, which is another reason not to skip it.
