Ken Dee Marshes

The Ken Dee Marshes sprawl across the Dumfries & Galloway landscape like something out of a nature documentary - a vast wetland system where the River Dee meanders through reed beds and open water. Whooper swans, greylags, pintails and redshank are common sightings if you know where to look. Spring brings breeding birds and the whole place comes alive with activity and noise.

Walkers will find this rewarding, though it demands patience. You need to move slowly, watch carefully, and accept that sometimes you'll see nothing dramatic at all. Families with restless younger kids might find an hour the limit before the marshes feel repetitive. But birdwatchers and serious nature photographers could spend a full day here without running out of subjects.

Castle Douglas sits just south, making the marshes an easy addition to any Galloway break.
