What makes it tick is the sheer size of the things. These aren't model railways or quaint heritage nonsense - they're real machines that did proper work, and watching them operate is hypnotic. The museum explains the technical side well enough, but frankly, you're there for the sound and the spectacle. Kids find it either brilliant or bewildering, depending on their tolerance for noise and machinery.

It's a solid half-day from one of the nearby caravan parks - Walton on Thames Camping and Caravanning Club Site is barely three miles away - though you'll want to check opening hours and whether steam days coincide with your visit. Some visits won't see the engines running, which is disappointing but worth planning for. Admission details aren't always clear online, so ring ahead.

If you're camping locally and have school-age kids interested in industrial history or engineering, it's well worth the short drive. Don't expect manicured gardens or easy accessibility everywhere - this is a working museum, rough round the edges, which is half its charm.
