The concrete bunker sitting in a field near Coldstream feels impossibly out of place until you realise what it is - a Regional Operations Centre built during the Cold War to coordinate civil defence across the Scottish Borders. This is essentially a time capsule from 1961, when someone genuinely thought nuclear war might happen and that a fortified hole in the ground could somehow save the region.

Inside, the bunker is cramped and austere. You descend into a warren of narrow corridors and small rooms fitted out with period communications equipment, maps marked with potential blast zones, and bleakly functional furniture. There's something rather sobering about standing in a space designed to shelter officials while the world above burned. The staff are knowledgeable and won't patronise you - they treat visitors as intelligent people capable of understanding both the practical engineering and the Cold War anxiety that built places like this.

History buffs will find it genuinely absorbing; casual visitors might spend an hour before the claustrophobia sets in. Children do sometimes find it interesting, but only if they're old enough to understand what they're looking at. It's not a playground.

The site is free to visit during opening hours, though it's worth checking times ahead as access can be limited. If you're staying at Coldstream Holiday Park just down the road, it's an easy detour - gives you something substantial to do on a drizzly afternoon without breaking the bank. Pair it with Coldstream itself if you need a proper village wander.
