Kelber Hill

The walk up Kelber Hill takes about forty minutes from Barnoldswick, and the effort pays off with views that stretch across the Pendle Valley and beyond. It's a proper fell walk without being brutal - steep in patches, boggy in others, but nothing that'll have you questioning your life choices halfway up. The summit itself is modest, just a cairn and some weathered rocks, but on a clear day you can see right across to Pendle Hill and the surrounding moorland. What makes it worth doing is the walk itself rather than any fancy facilities at the top. There's nothing there - no café, no visitor centre, no sheep souvenirs - which is exactly the appeal for anyone after some proper peace and quiet. Families with confident walkers aged ten and up will manage it fine. Younger kids or anyone after an easy stroll might find the climb a bit much. The best time to go is after rain when the ground's had a chance to dry out but the air's still clear. Allow two hours for the full outing, less if you're quick on your feet. Free to access, as these things usually are. If you're staying at one of the local glamping spots - Thornton Hall Country Park and Deerstone are both within a few miles - it makes a cracking half-day excursion between more leisurely park activities. The moorland can get claggy in winter, so spring through early autumn is your window.
