Keighley Wood

Keighley Wood is a proper woodland walk just outside Preston - the sort of place that doesn't announce itself but rewards you if you find it. It's a genuine forest, not a manicured country estate, with mature trees, decent footpaths, and the occasional boggy bit if you've had recent rain. You're looking at maybe an hour to ninety minutes wandering through, depending on how far you want to push into it.

The wood itself is fairly straightforward - no major viewpoints or visitor facilities, so this isn't somewhere you'd spend a whole day. What you get instead is proper woodland atmosphere. Families with younger kids will find it accessible enough, though the paths can be uneven. Walkers will appreciate the cover and the chance to stretch legs without fighting crowds. Historians won't find much here beyond the wood itself, but there's something worth having if you just want to breathe properly for an hour and not look at a car park.

It's free to access, obviously - it's a wood, not a theme park. Timing-wise, go in the morning before it gets muddy from foot traffic, and avoid deep winter if you dislike waterlogged paths. If you're based at any of the nearby caravan sites - Orchard Glamping's closest at under two miles - this makes a quick morning sortie before hitting Preston proper. Not spectacular, but solid. The kind of place that reminds you why you came to Lancashire in the first place.
