Keddie Gardens

The gardens sit on the eastern edge of Burntisland, a sprawling nature reserve that feels more wild than manicured. What you get here is proper woodland walks through native trees, open grassland where the Firth of Forth stretches out, and enough quiet corners to actually hear yourself think - rare enough these days.

It's the kind of place walkers genuinely prefer to the honeypot attractions. There are established paths, though nothing demanding, and the views back across the water toward Edinburgh are unexpectedly good without being showy about it. The reserve supports local wildlife too - birds, insects, the usual suspects - but you won't need a field guide to enjoy yourself. Families with younger kids can manage an hour comfortably; anyone keen on a proper ramble can easily stretch to two or three hours depending on which routes you take.

Going outside high season is absolutely the right call. Summer weekends can draw the crowds from nearby Burntisland, but a crisp autumn morning or quiet weekday visit feels like you've found something locals don't bang on about. Free to access, which helps.

Combine it with a wander round Burntisland itself - the harbour's actually rather pleasant - and you've got a solid day sorted.
