It's a straightforward viewpoint stop rather than a destination that demands hours. Park near Dorchester and head out for a bracing walk to take in the vista. The view itself is free, naturally, and you can spend as long as you want up there - twenty minutes works if you're rushed, or settle in for a proper hour if the light's good and you've got binoculars to pick out the geological details.

Geology enthusiasts will be in their element working out the different periods represented in those strata. Families with kids aged eight-plus will find it interesting enough, though younger ones might struggle with the abstract timescale involved. Photographers should aim for late afternoon when the light catches the exposed rock properly.

If you're staying at one of the touring parks nearby - Litton Lakes is closest at just over three miles out - you can easily slot this in as a morning or late-afternoon excursion. It pairs well with a longer coastal walk rather than standing as a destination in itself. The drive in from Dorchester takes twenty minutes or so, and the clifftop walk rewards you with views across Chesil Beach and beyond. Worth the detour if geology matters to you; less essential if you're purely after beaches and ice cream.
