Jupiter Head

Jupiter Head sits just outside Bath, a Roman temple site that most visitors drive straight past without realising. What you're looking at is the remains of a small Romano-British shrine - basically a stone platform where local people left offerings to Jupiter nearly two thousand years ago. The actual remains are modest: some carved stones and a modest excavation site, but if you're into Roman Britain, it's genuinely interesting to stand where that religious practice happened.

The real appeal is walking the footpath to reach it. You get proper countryside views across the Avon Valley, and the walk itself is more rewarding than the site. Bring the kids if they're keen on archaeology rather than after-the-fact excitement; younger children will likely find it underwhelming. Families staying at Bath Mill Lodge Retreat are well-placed - it's only 1.5 miles away and makes for a decent morning outing combined with exploring Bath itself. Those at CAMPWELL FARM, another 3 miles further out, could make it part of a longer country walk.

Timing-wise, allow 45 minutes to an hour including the walk and a look around. Admission appears to be free, which is just as well given how little actual structure survives. Go in late afternoon when the light softens across the valley. Winter's fine too - fewer walkers about, and the bare landscape gives clearer views of the landscape the Romans would have seen. It won't dominate your day, but if you're already in the Bath area, it's worth the detour.
