The Grand Union Canal cuts through Leicester like a proper working waterway should - and Junction Boatyard sits right at the heart of it all, where narrowboats tie up and the whole canal community comes alive. You've got working boats, people tending their vessels, the smell of diesel and fresh water, and that unmistakable sound of canal life that doesn't exist anywhere else. It's not a tourist attraction in the conventional sense. There's no gift shop, no admission fee, no "experience" - it's genuine, unglamorous, and all the better for it.

Walkers absolutely love this stretch. The towpath here is flat, well-maintained, and you can spend an hour or two watching the boats come and go, grabbing a coffee from whatever pop-up is operating that day, or simply sitting on a bench watching the light change on the water. Families with younger kids will enjoy the novelty of the boats for maybe 45 minutes before they want to move on, but teenagers and anyone interested in working waterways will find it genuinely absorbing.

It costs nothing to visit and you can turn up whenever. Early mornings are quietest if you prefer that. It's perfectly placed between Leicester city centre and some brilliant countryside, making it an ideal waypoint during a canal walk.
