Jugger Howe

The Bronze Age mound rises from the moorland just inland from Whitby like something out of a half-remembered dream. Jugger Howe is a proper archaeological site - a burial cairn that's been sitting here for roughly 4,000 years, and unlike some ancient sites, you can actually walk right up to it without barriers or visitors' centres getting in the way.

What you're looking at is a low earthen mound, maybe 30 metres across, with a ditch still visible around its edge. It doesn't photograph dramatically, and it won't take you hours to explore - fifteen minutes is realistic. But if you're already out walking the North Yorkshire moors between Whitby and the higher ground inland, it's absolutely worth the minor detour to stand on the spot where Bronze Age people left their dead and believed it would matter.

Historically minded walkers will get the most from Jugger Howe. Families with young kids might find it underwhelming unless you're building a wider story about ancient Britain. The real pull is the walk itself and the moorland context rather than the monument alone.
