Judson’s Recreation Ground

The walk into Judson's Recreation Ground from Meopham is more rewarding than you'd expect from a local nature reserve that doesn't shout about itself. Ancient woodland dominates here - proper old growth with the kind of trees that make you realise how small you are. There's a decent loop trail that takes about an hour, threading between oak and beech with enough woodland floor interest to keep kids spotting things rather than whingeing.

It's the sort of place where you're far more likely to see a nuthatch or woodpecker than crowds. The undergrowth is thick and tangled, which means genuine wildlife watching rather than a manicured park experience. If you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Badgells Wood Camping is only 3.4 miles away and has cracking reviews - this works as a proper half-morning venture without feeling like a consolation prize.

The reserve suits walkers who like a bit of peace and history types interested in how England's woodland has persisted. Families with young children will get an hour's value if the kids are into spotting birds or collecting leaves; beyond that, the appeal fades fast. There's not much signage or infrastructure, which some will find charmingly raw and others slightly frustrating. No cafe, no visitor centre.

It's free access, naturally, and best visited in spring or autumn when the light hits the canopy properly. Summer can feel a touch claustrophobic with all the growth. Worth combining with a stay at Thriftwood Country Park five miles up the road if you want a few nature walks alongside your camping break.
