Jubilee Covert

Walk into Jubilee Covert and you're straight into proper woodland - the kind of forest that doesn't feel managed to death. It's a decent-sized patch of trees near Aylesbury, good for stretching your legs without needing to plan an expedition. The paths wind through without being signposted to death, which means you get that actual woodland feel rather than a manicured nature reserve vibe.

This works best for families who want an hour's walk without the crowds, or anyone staying at Lashlake Barn looking for somewhere to burn off some energy nearby. If you've got kids aged five upwards, they'll manage the terrain fine - it's not steep or technical. Expect typical English woodland: oak, beech, the usual suspects. Bit muddy after rain, mind you.

Come in autumn and you've got colour without the peak-season chaos of somewhere like Wendover Woods. Spring's decent too, though you won't find it written up in the glossy guides. It's the sort of spot locals know about and visitors stumble across by accident.

The walk takes about an hour depending on how much you mess about. It's free to access - no car park fees, no entrance gates. Bring decent boots though. It's not going to be the highlight of your holiday, but as a half-morning slot between other things around Aylesbury, it's well worth the detour. Especially if you're based at Lashlake Barn just up the road.
