Bernwood Forest

The woodland around Bernwood, south of Aylesbury, is a proper working forest rather than a manicured walk-through experience. Ancient trees, woodland rides, and the sort of quiet that makes you actually notice birdsong. It's managed woodland - you'll spot timber operations and forestry work happening, which some find off-putting and others find honest.

What you're doing here is walking. Bring decent boots. The paths can be boggy even days after rain, and in summer the canopy is thick enough that the ground stays damp longer than you'd expect. Allow two to three hours for a decent circuit without rushing. It's not a destination you'd trek an hour to reach on its own, but if you're based at one of the local holiday parks - Common Leys Farm is barely a mile away - it's an excellent way to burn an hour or two between breakfast and lunch.

Families with young kids might find it less engaging than a proper country park with facilities and marked attractions. It's genuinely forest, not countryside theatre. But older children who actually like being outdoors rather than being entertained will have a much better time here than at somewhere more manicured.

Bring a map. Phone signal is patchy. There's no visitor centre, café, or car park facilities beyond a basic pull-in. Assuming it's free - and it appears to be - this is low-cost outdoor time. Winter is beautiful but muddy; spring brings proper woodland life. Go when you've got time to move slowly.
