Johnny Hill

Johnny Hill sits just north of Skipton, a modest peak that punches above its weight if you're after proper moorland walking without the four-hour slog. The summit rewards you with sweeping views across the Pennines - on a clear day you can pick out Pendle Hill to the west, and the whole Ribble Valley opens up below. It's not dramatic in the way Pen-y-ghent or Whernside are, but that's rather the point. Fewer people make the trek, so you get that rare thing: solitude with a view.

The ascent from Skipton takes roughly ninety minutes there and back, following bridlepaths and field edges with surprisingly little road work involved. It's rambler-friendly rather than scrambler terrain - the gradient stays steady and manageable. Go on a weekday morning and you might have the whole moorland to yourself. Families with reasonably confident walkers will manage it without drama.

Staying at one of the nearby campsites - Breaks Fold Farm or Catgill Farm sit barely three miles away - makes this a natural half-day addition to a broader Craven holiday. The Bolton Abbey Estate Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite offers proper infrastructure if you want amenities rather than bells-and-whistles glamping. Use Johnny Hill as your warm-up walk, then tackle the bigger peaks elsewhere in the area. Early morning light here is genuinely lovely, especially when the bracken catches the sun. Time it right and you'll wonder why it isn't on everyone's itinerary.
