John Whitehurst FRS 1713-1788

John Whitehurst was Derby's most famous son - an 18th-century clockmaker, geologist and natural philosopher who actually mattered. Born in 1713, he spent his life in the town making precision instruments and thinking about how the earth was formed, which in the 1700s was properly radical stuff.

You won't find a grand museum or visitor centre here. Instead, you're looking at Derby's heritage scattered across the town - plaques, mentions in local history, and the knowledge that this self-taught craftsman corresponded with the Royal Society and helped shape early geological science. It's the sort of thing that appeals to history types and anyone interested in how innovation happened before universities turned everything into a formal process.

Derby itself rewards a wander. The town has decent Georgian architecture dotted about, and Whitehurst's influence on the place is threaded through if you know where to look. The nearest holiday base is Hill Farm Camping & Caravan Park, about four and a half miles out - a solid five-star spot if you're planning to use Derby as your base for exploring the Peak District fringe.

Really, this is background reading rather than a day-trip destination. Come to Derby for the museums and the architecture, learn about Whitehurst while you're there, and appreciate that not every significant historical figure gets a theme park. Sometimes they just get a good story.
