John Roy Stewarts

The John Roy Stewart memorial stands on Culloden Battlefield just east of Inverness, marking where this particular Jacobite soldier fell in 1746. It's one of several clan and individual memorials dotted across the moor - easy to miss if you're not paying attention, but worth stopping at if you're doing the full walk round the site.

This isn't a major attraction in itself. You won't spend hours here. But if you're already at Culloden - which you should be, frankly - the memorial gives real weight to what happened. It's a name, not just a number in the 1,500-plus who died that day. History buffs will get the most from this, particularly those interested in the Highland Clearances and what the aftermath of Culloden meant for clan structures.

The site is free to access and the National Trust for Scotland has done excellent work interpreting the battlefield. Allow a good two hours minimum for the full experience, longer if you want to read everything. Autumn's best - fewer midges and the light hits the moor properly.

If you're staying at Ardtower Caravan Park or Go Glamping at Loch Ness, Culloden's a straightforward drive. Pair it with a visit into Inverness itself - the castle, the museum - and you've got a solid morning sorted. Worth the detour if you're in the Highlands anyway, though I wouldn't travel solely for this one memorial.
