The water's grey-green on the day I visited, reflecting low cloud that hung over the moors. John o'Gaunt Reservoir sits a few miles south of Harrogate, proper Yorkshire hill country, and it's the kind of place you'd miss entirely if you weren't looking for it. The dam itself is fairly modest - no grand Victorian engineering showpiece - but what matters is the walk around it. The footpath is straightforward, takes about an hour for a complete loop, and the landscape opens up as you go. Stone walls, rough grassland, the occasional fell pony.
