John Clare's grave

The poet John Clare is buried in St Botolph's churchyard in Helpston, a small village just outside Stamford. If you're camping nearby - The Nest Glamping is only 3.3 miles away - it's a quiet, moving pilgrimage worth making on foot or by car.

Clare spent much of his life here, and his grave sits among the other headstones in this ordinary Cambridgeshire churchyard. There's no fancy monument, no grand memorial. It's simply his stone, like dozens of others, which somehow feels right given how much he struggled for recognition during his lifetime. The man wrote some of England's finest nature poetry and died in an asylum. Coming here makes that fact hit differently.

You won't spend hours here - it's a short visit, perhaps twenty minutes if you're reflective. The churchyard itself is pleasant enough for a wander, but this isn't a destination that demands a full morning. Rather, it works perfectly as a half-hour detour when you're based at one of the nearby campsites. Ferry Meadows, 5.4 miles south, would make a good base if you're combining this with proper country walks.

The village of Helpston has a modest heritage museum focused on Clare's life if you want more context - it sits near the church. Free admission to the churchyard, obviously. Best visited on a grey English afternoon, honestly. Feels more fitting that way.
