John Clare Cottage, Museum, Café and Gardens

The cottage where John Clare was born in 1793 still stands in Helpston, a few miles east of Stamford, and it's genuinely affecting to walk through those low doorways and imagine the poet scribbling verses in such modest surroundings. The museum does a solid job of explaining who Clare was - a rural labourer who became one of England's most important Romantic poets - without patronising you or laying on too much literary grandeur. You'll see his manuscripts, personal effects, and get a real sense of how he lived. The gardens are proper lovely, especially if you're interested in the plants and flowers he actually wrote about. Allow a couple of hours if you're doing the cottage, museum and a wander outside. It's free to the gardens but there's a charge for the museum - worth it if poetry or local history speaks to you. The cottage appeals most to literary types and serious walkers exploring the area around Stamford. Families with young children might find it quiet and a bit slow-paced.
