Jockey Hole

The limestone cave sits tucked into the hillside above Lancaster, and it's the sort of spot that rewards a bit of scrambling. Jockey Hole isn't some vast cathedral cavern - it's modest, really, just a natural opening that cuts back into the rock face with enough headroom to stand upright inside. The entrance is the best bit: you get proper views across the valley once you've made the climb up from the lane below.

It's a straightforward walk rather than a proper caving expedition. The cave itself takes minutes to explore, so don't expect an hour-long underground adventure. What makes it worthwhile is the setting and the walk itself. The surrounding moorland has that particular Yorkshire character - a bit windswept, genuinely quiet, and the kind of landscape that looks better the longer you're in it. Kids will find it interesting as a curiosity, though younger children might find the approach a bit steep and lose interest quickly once they're inside.

This works well if you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks - Orcaber Farm is only three miles away, making it an easy afternoon outing. Primrose Glamping Pods is a bit further but still within striking distance. Summer is your best bet for accessibility, though the cave itself doesn't really have a season. Bring sensible footwear; the approach can be boggy. It's free to visit and there are no facilities, so come prepared.

Worth the detour if you're already in the area. Don't make a special trip just for this alone, but combine it with walking in the surrounding countryside and you've got a proper afternoon sorted.
