Jo Downs Handmade Glass - Sunningdale

Glass-blowing is one of those crafts that looks effortless until you watch someone actually do it. Jo Downs' studio in Sunningdale - just outside Windsor - is where you can see it happen, and it's genuinely absorbing to watch. The gallery space itself holds a rotating collection of handmade glass pieces: bowls, vessels, sculptural bits. Nothing mass-produced. Everything has that slight variation you get when humans make things rather than machines.

It's a low-key spot, the sort of place you'd pop into on a lazy afternoon if you're staying nearby rather than make a special trip. That said, if you're into craft work or glass in particular, it's worth knowing about. Kids can find it interesting for twenty minutes or so - watching the furnace and the shaping process holds their attention - but this isn't an interactive experience. You're observing, not doing.

Sunningdale sits between Windsor and Bracknell, so it works well as a quick stop if you're already exploring the area. The caravan parks dotted around Chertsey and Warfield are four to six miles away, making this an easy afternoon diversion. Opening hours and admission charges aren't clearly listed online, so ring ahead before you visit - nothing worse than turning up somewhere and finding the doors closed.

Worth a look if you're passing through. Just don't expect grand crowds or lengthy queues.
