Jewry Wall & Roman Baths

The Jewry Wall in Leicester is one of the most impressive bits of Roman masonry left standing in Britain, and it's genuinely striking when you round the corner and see it for the first time. You're looking at a 30-foot high wall that once formed part of a public bath complex built around 150 AD - the scale of it just stops you in your tracks. The attached Roman Baths museum sits right beside it, letting you piece together what life was actually like when this place was properly busy with bathers and merchants.

It's free to wander around outside and get a proper look at the wall itself, though the museum costs a few quid entry. You won't need more than an hour here unless you're really into Roman archaeology - the wall speaks for itself, honestly, and the museum fills in the gaps without overwhelming you. History types will absolutely rate it; kids often find it more engaging than you'd expect once they realise actual Romans built this and used those same stone blocks to heat their baths.

Come midweek if you can, when it's properly quiet. Leicester town centre is just minutes away on foot, so you could easily combine this with other bits and pieces while you're in the city. If you're based at Bradgate Park or Green Acres Caravan Park, both just a few miles out, the wall makes a brilliant half-day addition to a park holiday without any faffing about with long drives.
