Jessop's Hill

The walk up Jessop's Hill takes maybe twenty minutes from Haywards Heath, and frankly it's worth every step. You're climbing to one of the highest points in Sussex - nothing dramatic compared to the South Downs proper, but there's a real sense of achievement when you reach the top and the landscape suddenly opens out. On a clear day you can see right across the Weald, all rolling woodland and field patterns stretching toward Kent.

It's the kind of place that rewards you for minimal effort. Walkers love it because the ascent isn't brutal and the views justify the exertion. Families with older kids find it manageable - just keep them entertained on the way up and they'll be distracted by the vistas at the summit. History types won't find much narrative here, but there's something satisfying about standing at a proper high point and understanding why Sussex people marked it as significant.

The hill works brilliantly if you're based at Wild Boar Wood Campsite or Hook Farm just down the road - both are excellent spots, and this becomes your escape when you want a walk without committing to a full day out. Head up in late afternoon when the light softens and Haywards Heath spreads out below you. Free, obviously. Allow an hour return from town including the climb.
