Jef hill

You get a proper sense of peace walking Jef Hill, a smallish nature reserve just outside Preston where the Lancashire landscape shows its quieter side. It's moorland and rough grassland mostly, nothing dramatic, but that's rather the point. The paths are easy enough for families, and on a clear day you can see across the Fylde Plain without fighting crowds.

Historically it matters because the habitat here supports ground-nesting birds and bog plants that have largely vanished elsewhere in the region. Birdwatchers come specifically for that. If you're bringing kids, allow an hour for a gentle wander - any longer and they'll start asking when you're going back to the caravan. Spring and early summer are best, when the wildflowers are out and the light sits differently on the moor.

The reserve works well as a morning stop if you're based at Brickhouse Caravan Park or Cross Lane, both within easy reach and rated brilliantly. It's not the sort of place you'd drive an hour to visit specially, but if you're staying locally for a park holiday in Lancashire, it fills a half-day nicely. Free to access, no facilities on site, so bring water and decent shoes - the ground can be boggy after rain. Real Lancashire, unpretentious and worth half your morning.
