Iwerddon

The walk up Iwerddon is a proper slog if you're coming from Blaenau Ffestiniog, but the Snowdonia views from the summit make it worthwhile. You're looking at a steep climb through moorland and rough grass - nothing technical, but you'll feel it in your legs. On a clear day the peaks roll out in every direction, and you can pick out Snowdon itself if visibility's decent.

It's the sort of walk that suits people who don't mind getting their boots muddy and aren't looking for marked paths and tea shops at the top. Families with older kids will manage it fine, though younger ones might find the relentless gradient tiresome. Allow a couple of hours for the round trip depending on fitness.

The nearest base is Blaenau Ffestiniog, a former slate quarry town with genuine character - rough around the edges but honest. If you're staying at Llechwedd Glamping at Plas Weunydd, you're barely a mile away, which makes this an easy morning outing before heading to bigger attractions. Llyn Gwynant Campsite is further out at 3.5 miles but sits in a stunning valley setting, so adding Iwerddon to a wider walking day makes sense.

Go early to avoid the afternoon mist rolling in. Bring waterproofs - the weather changes fast up here. It's free, of course, and you won't see crowds.
