Itter Park

The River Itter cuts through Cambridgeshire countryside just outside Peterborough, and this nature reserve is where the waterway really shows off. It's a proper working landscape - managed grassland, wet woodland, and stretches of riverbank where you can actually see what's living there rather than just walking past it blindly.

The whole thing sprawls across enough ground that you won't feel cramped, even on weekends. Paths are manageable rather than challenging, which suits families with younger kids and anyone who isn't after a fell-walk. Birdwatchers find their people here - the wet habitat pulls in waders and wildfowl, particularly in winter and spring migration. If you're into dragonflies or just want to spot newts, summer visits pay off.

How long to spend? Two to three hours if you're doing a proper circuit. You could dash through in forty minutes, but that misses the point. There's no visitor centre to eat up time or rain on your plans, so what you get depends on your pace and what catches your eye.

It fits brilliantly alongside the caravan spots nearby. Ferry Meadows is just 3.6 miles away and rated strongly - good base for combining this with bigger attractions around Peterborough without needing to drive far. Nene Outdoors campsite is equally close if you want something slightly less formal. The Nest Glamping, a bit further at 6 miles, works if you want to treat yourself between days out.
