Isleham Hoard

The Isleham Hoard isn't somewhere you'll stumble upon by accident. There's no visitor centre, no gift shop, no car park with an ice cream van. What happened here, though, is genuinely remarkable - a Bronze Age treasure trove discovered in 1929 that rewrote how people understood prehistoric Britain.

The find itself consisted of over 6,500 bronze objects, likely deposited around 1100 BC. They're mostly in museums now (the British Museum holds the bulk), but the actual discovery site near Ely still matters to anyone interested in archaeology or early British history. Walking around the spot where metal-workers once buried their life's work is quite something, even if there's nothing physically visible to see anymore.

This appeals mainly to archaeology enthusiasts and history buffs rather than casual visitors. Don't expect dramatic ruins or reconstructed settlements. It's more about understanding the landscape and imagining the significance of what was found here. If you're staying at nearby Trelander Camping & Caravanning and fancy a proper detour into prehistory, it's worth the short drive to Ely and then out to the Isleham area.

Allow an hour or so if you're making a day of walking and exploring the wider fenland, but don't expect to spend more than 20 minutes at the actual site. Best visited on a clear day when you can properly appreciate the flat Cambridge countryside that would have looked entirely different 3,000 years ago. Free to visit, naturally. No facilities, so plan accordingly.
