Irvine Beach Park

The beach at Irvine stretches out grey and golden depending on the light, with the Firth of Clyde sprawling across the horizon. This isn't a manicured seaside attraction - it's a proper working nature reserve where you'll actually see things: waders picking through the shallows, terns diving for fish, and if you're lucky, a seal hauled out on the rocks.

The park sits right where the River Irvine meets the sea, which means the habitat shifts constantly between saltmarsh, mudflat, and beach. It's marvellous for birdwatchers, especially autumn and winter when migrating species stop off. You can walk the shoreline for miles without seeing another soul, which is either exactly what you want or a bit desolate depending on your mood.

Families will find it fine for a ramble, though there's no playground or ice cream van - bring your own kit. The mudflats can be slippery, so proper shoes matter. Allow two to three hours if you're serious about exploring, or an hour for a quick walk and a sit-down.

If you're staying at Parkdean Resorts Sandylands just down the coast, Irvine Beach Park makes a solid half-day excursion. It breaks up the holiday park routine without feeling like you've driven across the country. Fair warning though - it can be windy, the sea is cold, and it's definitely not the postcard-perfect seaside of further south. But that's precisely why it works.
