Iping and Stedham Commons

These two commons roll together across the Hampshire-West Sussex border near Chichester, offering proper countryside walking without the crowds you'd find on busier South Downs trails. It's excellent for a couple of hours of wandering, though the scenery won't stop you dead in your tracks. You can loop between the two commons and pick your own distance - anywhere from 30 minutes to half a day depending on mood. The ground can get boggy after rain, so decent boots matter. It's free to roam, as commons tend to be, and there's no formal opening hours to worry about. If you're based at one of the nearby caravan sites - Bow Hill Farm is closest at under five miles away, or Graffham Camping if you prefer the club atmosphere - this makes a sensible morning or afternoon jaunt to break up the holiday. Pair it with a proper walk on the South Downs proper if you want something with more altitude and views. On a grey day when the bigger parks feel too exposed, these commons are genuinely pleasant. Just don't expect magic.
