You'll find this contemporary art space in Sudbury, a market town with real character along the River Stour. Investables is a gallery that takes itself seriously - the work on show tends towards the thought-provoking rather than the decorative, which means you're either going to leave energised or slightly baffled. That's fair enough.

The space itself is clean and unfussy, letting whatever's hanging get proper attention. They rotate shows fairly regularly, so what you see depends entirely on when you visit. Check ahead before making the trip - there's nothing worse than turning up to find a private view or a gap between exhibitions.

This isn't a spot for kids hoping to run about, but if you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Cranfield Retreat & Glamping is excellent if you can stretch to it - and you fancy a proper look at contemporary art without the stuffiness of a major institution, it's well worth an hour of your time. Sudbury itself rewards a wander: decent independent shops, a surprisingly good lunch situation, and proper old architecture that reminds you why these market towns matter.

Allow ninety minutes at most, longer if there's a catalogue to pore over. Go midweek if possible. The town's quieter then, and you'll actually be able to think about what you're looking at rather than dodging school groups.
