Inverclyde Walled Garden and Pets Corner

The walled garden at Inverclyde is exactly what it sounds like - a proper enclosure with beds of vegetables, herbs, and flowers that someone has actually bothered to maintain. You wander around on gravel paths with walls on either side, and there's a genuine sense of purpose to it all, unlike those half-abandoned Victorian gardens you find elsewhere. The Pets Corner adds a different dimension. It's not a full petting zoo, but you'll find rabbits, guinea pigs, and other small animals in good condition - the kind of thing that keeps under-tens entertained for twenty minutes or so without costing the earth.

It works best as a short stop rather than a destination in itself. Budget forty minutes to an hour, and families with young children will get more out of it than serious gardeners. The walled enclosure keeps wind at bay, which matters in Argyll where the weather can turn brisk. Head there in late spring or summer when the garden's actually producing something worth looking at.
