Inveraray Jail and Escape Room

The Victorian prison that dominates Inveraray's main street is properly atmospheric - all austere stone walls and narrow corridors that give you a genuine sense of what jail time actually felt like in the 1800s. You're walked through the cells, the courtroom where sentences were handed down, and the punishment block, with volunteer guides who know their stuff and aren't afraid to be a bit grim about it.

The escape room element is bolted on to the main experience, so don't expect state-of-the-art puzzles. It's more novelty than challenge, really - fun if you've got teenagers in tow, but the real draw is the jail itself. Allow a couple of hours if you want to do both, though the prison alone takes forty minutes or so.

History buffs will find it genuinely interesting rather than sensationalised. The building itself is the star - original fixtures, authentic details. Families with younger kids sometimes find the darker aspects a touch heavy, though older children usually lap it up.

Inveraray Caravan Park is just a mile or so away, which makes it a dead easy morning or afternoon slot during a wider Argyll holiday. Stucreoch, further out, gives you more space but you're committing to a drive if you fancy coming back. Open most days year-round, though hours shift seasonally - worth checking ahead.
