Inveraray Castle

The drive up to Inveraray Castle catches you off guard - suddenly there's this proper Scottish baronial mansion sitting beside Loch Fyne, all turrets and crenellations reflected in the water. It's the seat of the Duke of Argyll, so you're looking at genuine aristocratic architecture rather than a museum recreation, which makes a difference.

Inside, the rooms feel lived-in. The armoury is genuinely impressive - weapons and suits of mail crammed into every wall - and the library has that smell of old books that makes history buffs go quiet. Most visitors spend a solid two hours working through the state rooms, though you can rush it in 90 minutes if you're skipping the detail. The grounds are worth a wander too, though they're not enormous.

Historie enthusiasts and anyone keen on 18th-century design will get proper value here. Families with young children might find it a bit heavy on the staring-at-furniture side - there's no play area, and kids under about eight tend to lose interest fast. The village of Inveraray itself is charming enough for a tea stop afterwards.

Parking is straightforward and admission prices are on their website. If you're basing yourself at Argyll Caravan Park just down the road, this makes a decent rainy-day outing or a half-day activity combined with a drive round the loch. It's worth a morning, not a full day, but it's well done rather than overcrowded with visitors.
