Into The Wild

Into The Wild sits just outside Ashford, and it's one of those places that catches you off guard. What starts as a fairly standard woodland walk becomes something altogether more interesting once you realise the whole thing is a proper art installation - sculptures and creative interventions hidden throughout the trees, designed to make you look at the landscape differently.

You're walking through actual woodland, not some manicured theme park. The pieces are subtle enough that you'll miss half of them if you're not paying attention, which is rather the point. It rewards a slower pace and a bit of curiosity. Kids aged eight and up will genuinely engage with spotting things and working out what they mean; younger ones might find it a bit abstract for their liking.

Allow a couple of hours minimum, longer if you're taking photos or stopping to sit and think about things. There's no set route, so you can wander as the mood takes you. It works brilliantly as a break from a glamping stay - Wildside Camping and Glamping is just three miles away, and Wood View Farm Glamping a touch further. Both give you proper countryside bases without the tent-and-wet-sleeping-bag misery.

Bring decent shoes; the ground can be boggy after rain. Check ahead for opening times and admission costs - details aren't widely publicised, which somehow fits the slightly off-the-radar nature of the place. Worth the detour if you like art and woodland in equal measure.
