Instow Pond

A modest pond just outside Bideford that serves as a straightforward spot for a sit-down with a sandwich. There's not much to it - a small body of water, some benches, and enough space to let the kids run about for twenty minutes before they get restless. The appeal is purely practical: it's free, accessible, and does what it says on the tin.

Local families use it as a quick break point rather than a destination in its own right. If you're staying at any of the nearby holiday parks - Braddicks is closest at 3.5 miles - it's handy for a lunchtime detour when you're exploring the North Devon coast. Bring your own food; there are no facilities beyond the picnic tables. Don't expect scenic views or particular charm. It's the sort of place you'd appreciate on a sunny afternoon when you just need somewhere to sit and eat crisps without climbing back in the car.

Walkers might pass through on longer routes around the area, but it's not worth plotting a specific trip around. The Torridge estuary nearby offers far more compelling walking, and Bideford itself has better options for a proper morning out. That said, if you're camped locally and want five minutes of green space without driving somewhere, Instow Pond does the job. It's functional rather than special - and sometimes that's exactly what you need.
