Instow Beach

The Taw Estuary opens up into proper golden sand at Instow, a village beach just outside Bideford where the water is genuinely clear on a decent day. It's the kind of place where the tide does its thing dramatically - come back six hours later and you'll barely recognise it. The beach shelves gently, which means families with young kids won't spend their afternoon fishing toddlers out of a rip current, and there's actual space to run about without trampling sandcastles every three seconds. A promenade runs behind the sand with a few cafes and shops - nothing fancy, but you can get a coffee without hiking back to the car.

Timing matters here. Low tide reveals far more beach and pools worth exploring, but mid-tide is genuinely lovely for swimming. Summer weekends draw proper crowds, especially school holidays, so if solitude is the goal go early or in shoulder season. The walk from the village car park takes maybe three minutes. You could easily spend a full morning here, though afternoon light over the estuary is when it really sings.

For a holiday park base, Braddicks is practically on the doorstep at just over three miles away, making this a straightforward beach day without the drive. The beach pairs well with wandering Bideford's high street or heading to Westward Ho! if you want more facilities. It's not showy or Instagram-famous, which is rather the point - just a proper working beach that happens to be lovely.
