Inshes District Park phase 3

Phase 3 of Inshes District Park sits just outside Inverness, and it's the sort of place that creeps up on you. What started as a modest local green space has evolved into a proper nature reserve worth a detour if you're staying in the area. You get woodland paths, open grassland, and actual wildlife - nothing circus-like, just the genuine Highland experience compressed into an accessible afternoon.

The reserve works because it doesn't try too hard. Families with younger kids will manage the flatter sections fine; walkers after a bit more grunt can loop the perimeter and rack up a decent couple of hours. Bird watchers actually rate it - there's proper habitat here for finches and the occasional sparrowhawk if you're patient. The paths are well-maintained but unpretentious, muddy when wet, which is often in this part of Scotland.

If you're camped at Ardtower Caravan Park just down the road, you'd be daft not to at least nose around. It's free to access and there's no entrance fee nonsense to wade through. Spring and early summer are best - wildflowers properly light up the grassland sections, and the light at the edges of the woodlands is genuinely lovely. Winter's bleak but atmospheric if you like that sort of thing. Allow an hour for a quick amble, two if you're being thorough. This isn't a patch on some of the bigger Highland destinations, but for what it is - a genuine local nature reserve where folk come to actually birdwatch rather than Instagram - it delivers.
