An 18th-century ice house lurks quietly near Emsworth, one of those Victorian-era structures that reminds you how obsessed the gentry once were with keeping things cold. It's essentially a brick-lined pit dug into the ground where ice cut from frozen ponds would be stored under layers of straw and sawdust through the summer months. Proper ingenious, really.

You won't find much to do here in the conventional sense - it's small, often closed to the public, and visiting requires checking ahead or catching it during occasional open days. But if you're into industrial heritage, Georgian engineering, or just the odd history of how the rich stayed cool before electricity, it's genuinely interesting. The structure itself is modest but well-preserved, and there's something satisfying about standing inside a 300-year-old ice pit and understanding how it actually worked.

History types will get more from this than families with restless children. Allow 20 minutes maximum, unless you're the sort who'll spend an hour photographing brickwork. It fits well into a broader Emsworth visit - the town's got the harbour, independent shops, and decent pubs nearby. If you're staying at The Old Dairy Farm Glamping or Bow Hill Farm, it's a quick drive and worth tacking on if you're already in the area rather than planning a dedicated trip. Check opening arrangements before you go, though - this isn't somewhere that operates on a regular schedule.
