Ice House Bank

Ice House Bank is a quiet woodland walk just outside Penrith, the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan a day around. The forest here is proper dense - oak and beech mostly - with a small stream running through that's genuinely lovely in spring when the light filters through the new leaves.

You're looking at a straightforward woodland stroll rather than anything dramatic. The walk takes you down into a small wooded ravine where the air stays cool even on warm days (hence the rather romantic name). There's not much in the way of facilities or interpretation boards, which some find frustrating and others prefer - it's just you, the trees, and the occasional bird.

Historically, the site's name hints at ice storage from centuries past, though there's little to actually see of that now. It's more atmospheric than educational.

Best suited to walkers and nature types who don't need visitor centres or themed attractions. Young kids might find it a bit samey after twenty minutes, but if you've got teenagers who like a quiet forest ramble, they'll appreciate it. The walk works well as a half-hour detour if you're staying at Crossfells Campsite nearby - combines nicely with a proper walk in the fells around Penrith rather than being a destination in itself.

Free to access, no real opening hours to worry about. Go early morning if possible; late afternoon the light gets thin quite fast under the tree cover.
