Hythe Lagoons

The lagoons sit just outside Colchester, a stretch of shallow water that fills and empties with the tides in a way that feels almost meditative to watch. It's the sort of place where you can actually see how the Essex coastline works - water moving in patterns that have been doing their thing for centuries without needing any fuss or drama about it.

There's not much to "do" here in the traditional sense, and that's precisely why it works. Birdwatchers come regularly because the lagoons attract waders and wildfowl depending on the season. The banks are open enough that you can walk alongside the water without scrambling through undergrowth, and the light across the water at dusk is genuinely worth timing your visit for. It's the kind of place where you stand still for twenty minutes without realising you've done it.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Mersea Island Holiday Park or Coopers Beach are both within easy striking distance - this makes a proper low-key morning or afternoon slot. Don't expect cafes or facilities. Bring binoculars if you're into birds. It's free, and there's no strict opening hours situation to worry about.

Worth it? Only if you're the type who appreciates quiet water and the occasional heron. If you need amusement arcades and ice cream vans, you'll be disappointed. For everyone else, it's exactly what coastal Essex should be.
