Hutton Country Park

The car park fills up quickly on weekends, which tells you something about how locals rate this place. Hutton Country Park, just outside Billericay, is proper Essex countryside - woodland trails, open grassland, the occasional glimpse of wildlife if you're patient. It's the sort of spot where you can blow off steam for an hour or just wander about without any real agenda.

Walkers get the most from it. The paths wind through decent-sized trees and there are enough variations to stop it feeling repetitive, though it's not challenging terrain by any stretch. Families with younger kids will manage fine, and dogs absolutely love it here. The grassland areas mean children can actually run about without constantly dodging roots.

Timing matters. Early morning or late afternoon, especially in spring and summer, you'll see more birds and have the place practically to yourself. Midday on a Saturday is rammed.

If you're staying at Barleylands Campsite down the road, this is ideal for stretching your legs between breakfast and whatever else the day brings. It won't eat up a whole afternoon, but it's a decent 90-minute walk if you take your time and actually look about. Free access, no gates, no faffing around. Worth the short drive from Billericay if the weather's decent and you fancy some greenery without the crowds of more famous spots.
