Hurtle Hill

Climbing through woodland paths to reach this modest Shropshire summit, you'll find Hurtle Hill offers a proper workout without the drama of the Welsh borders. The peak sits just outside Stourport-on-Severn and rewards walkers with decent views across the Severn Valley, though don't expect anything earth-shattering.

Families with older children will enjoy the challenge - it's steep enough to feel like an achievement but manageable for most fitness levels. The route up takes you through mixed woodland that's particularly lovely in autumn, with bluebells carpeting the forest floor come spring.

From the top, you can spot the River Severn winding its way through the valley below, with Stourport's canal network visible on clear days. It's not Snowdon, but for a morning's exercise it does the job nicely.

Allow two to three hours for the round trip, including time to catch your breath at the summit. Early morning visits tend to be quieter, and you'll often have the place to yourself midweek.

If you're staying at one of the nearby holiday parks around Stourport - Lickhill Manor or Little Lakes are both within easy reach - this makes for a cracking way to burn off yesterday's pub lunch. The kids will sleep better after a proper hill walk, and you'll have earned your evening pint.
