Hurst Wood

The woodland around Hurst Wood offers proper walking territory without the crowds you'd find at more famous Sussex spots. Ancient beech and oak trees make up most of what's here, with a network of paths that range from straightforward loops to more ambitious woodland routes that connect toward Tunbridge Wells.

This isn't a destination that'll hold your attention for hours on end unless you're genuinely into forestry or keen on a serious hike. What it does well is serve as a breathing space during a longer walking holiday - a place to stretch your legs for ninety minutes without needing a plan. The woodland floor is decent underfoot most of the year, though winter mud can be relentless. There's something calming about it, even when other walkers are about.

Families with older kids who actually want to walk rather than moan will manage fine here. Younger ones might find it a bit samey after twenty minutes. The area works best as part of a broader Sussex itinerary - Tunbridge Wells lies within reasonable striking distance if you're based at Hopgarden Glamping and Camping, which sits just 6.4 miles away.

Timing-wise, spring and early autumn are obviously nicer than the muggier months or deep winter. There's no visitor infrastructure to speak of, so bring water and realistic expectations. It's straightforward access from the road, free to wander, and worth the detour if you're in the area and want a proper walk without the hassle of booking anything or queuing.
